Nervous on Day One. A Leader Today.

When Nishi Bergi walked into her first class at Mastery Martial Arts in Troy, she was nervous. The advanced class was still going — sparring drills, fast movements, students who clearly knew exactly what they were doing. She didn’t even have a uniform yet.

But something happened that she still remembers: everyone treated her like she had been training with them for years. Polite introductions. Questions about herself and school. A warm welcome before class even started.

“I did not have a uniform yet, but everyone still treated me like I had been training with them for years.” — Nishi Bergi, Black Belt Candidate, Age 15

Her parents chose martial arts deliberately — not for a sport, but for something deeper. They wanted Nishi to develop confidence, discipline, and respect. Not just a skill, but a mindset. Eight years later, that investment has paid off in ways they never could have predicted.

Why She’s Earning Her Black Belt

For Nishi, earning a Black Belt was never just about the rank. It was about becoming someone who has the strength of that mindset — someone who knows what is right, applies it, and teaches others by example.

“To have the strength of that mindset, and that as a person I know what is right, I apply it, and teach others by example.” — Nishi Bergi

The road wasn’t always smooth. The hardest challenge she faced was failing a test — and the spiral of comparing her journey to others. It is a feeling many students know well.

But Nishi found her answer in the very values she was learning on the mat.

“I reminded myself that this is exactly what becoming a Black Belt means. To persevere, show respect, and tenacity for what I started.” — Nishi Bergi

The Life Skills Nishi Built Over 8 Years

Martial arts training at Mastery Martial Arts goes far beyond kicks and punches — it builds the whole child.

🌟

Leadership

Nishi credits leadership as her greatest growth. She can now state her ideas, accomplish tasks, and include others — all while being honest about what she knows and doesn’t know, and recognizing when to step up.

💪

Confidence & Safety

Martial arts has made Nishi feel safer at school. She knows her right to stand up for herself and has the tools to protect herself from harm — a confidence that comes from real training, not just words.

💚

Perseverance

When she didn’t pass a test, Nishi didn’t quit. She reminded herself that perseverance is exactly what becoming a Black Belt means — and she came back stronger every time.

🎯

Focus & Application

“Practice as if it’s real.” That dojo lesson transformed how Nishi approaches everything — from self-defense to homework, research, and studying. She brings the same intensity to every challenge.

🤝

Respect & Honesty

Nishi has developed the ability to be honest about what she knows and doesn’t know — a rare and powerful form of respect for herself and others that she carries into every area of her life.

🌟

Health & Productivity

At home, Nishi feels healthier and more productive. Eight years of consistent training have built habits of discipline and self-care that extend far beyond the dojo walls.

The Day Troy Won the Demo Competition

Ask Nishi about her most memorable moment at Mastery Martial Arts, and she points to the day the Troy Demo Team won their very first competition — and the role she played in making it happen.

“I was incredibly proud of the kids I had taught and helped along the way during practice, and it was phenomenal to see our vision come true.” — Nishi Bergi

Nishi wasn’t just a competitor that day — she was a teacher and a mentor. She had helped younger students prepare, guided them through practice, and invested in their success. Winning together meant everything.

Her biggest role model? Her best friend Raahini — someone she met right here at Mastery Martial Arts.

“She is always displaying at least 3 of the life skills every day, and she doesn’t even realize it — making it so much cooler that it’s a part of who she is.” — Nishi Bergi

Nishi’s Advice to Every New Student

“Achieving Black Belt is essentially unlocking a better version of yourself. By working every day, you’re investing in that dream.”
— Nishi Bergi, Black Belt Candidate, Mastery Martial Arts Troy

What Black Belt Means to Nishi

“To me, Black Belt means that a person is fully in control of their actions, words, and thoughts, and understands how to help others and themselves. They ask for help when they need it, they learn how to help others, and it is the turning point in a person which physically shows their inner belief of themselves.”

The Lesson She Uses Every Single Day

“Practice as if it’s real.” In self-defense, they train as if the threat is real. Nishi has applied that same intensity to her homework, her research, and her studying. The dojo didn’t just teach her to fight — it taught her how to show up fully for everything she does.

How She’s Preparing for Her Black Belt Test

Practicing at home. Sending in videos. Asking upper belt ranks questions in class. Annotating the testing requirements packet. Nishi is approaching her Black Belt test the same way she approaches everything — with full commitment and no shortcuts.
