The Drive From Sterling Heights

Sterling Heights and Troy share a border. Dequindre Road is the line. So the trip is shorter than most parents expect when they see a Troy address.

The route is one road for almost the whole way. Take 18 Mile Road west. It turns into Long Lake Road the moment you cross Dequindre into Troy. Then go south on Rochester Road for about a mile and a half. We are at 3656 Rochester Road, between Big Beaver and Wattles.

OUR STORY

I have been teaching children martial arts for 34 years. Not adults. Children. That is the whole job, and it is the only thing this school does.

In that time I have watched a few thousand kids come through the door. Almost none of them arrived confident. They arrived shy, or wild, or convinced they were bad at sports. What changes them is not the kicking. It is being asked to do something slightly beyond what they think they can do, over and over, in a room where nobody laughs when they miss.

The American Academy of Pediatrics makes the same point about martial arts and focus. I have just watched it happen in person for three decades.

I am Denny Strecker. I hold four black belts and have written two Amazon best selling books for parents. I teach the classes myself.

The Mastery Moment

The instant a kid changes their mind about themselves

Confidence does not come from a trophy. Every parent already knows this, because they have watched a participation medal change nothing.

It comes from a specific moment. Your child looks at a board they are sure they cannot break, swings anyway, and it breaks. Or they lead a drill in front of twenty kids without their voice shaking. Or they get something wrong, and instead of shutting down, they go again.

That is the moment we are actually working toward. Everything else on this page is scaffolding around it.

Why Sterling Heights Families Make the Drive

There are karate schools closer to you. Some of them are good. Here is what parents tell us they came here for instead.

One instructor, not a rotating staff. I teach the classes. Your child is not handed to whichever teenager is scheduled that night.

Kids only. No adult classes sharing the mat, no family classes. Every class is built for a specific age range, so a 5 year old is never lost in a room full of 12 year olds.

Month to month. No annual contract to sign and no buyout to argue about if life changes.

Thirty three years in one place. Long enough that parents who trained as kids now bring their own children.

Kids Martial Arts Classes for Sterling Heights Families, Grouped by Age

Tiny Tigers karate class for 3 and 4 year olds at Mastery Martial Arts in Troy MI

Ages 3 to 4

TINY TIGERS

Thirty minutes, built for an attention span that is still forming.

At this age we are not teaching self defense. We are teaching a child to stand on a spot, look at a grown up who is talking, and try something they are not good at yet.

  • Standing still and listening for longer than a minute
  • Following a two step instruction the first time
  • Balance, hopping, and catching up on coordination
  • Getting comfortable being away from you for half an hour

Little Dragons karate class for 5 and 6 year olds at Mastery Martial Arts in Troy MI

Ages 5 to 6

LITTLE DRAGONS

The kindergarten and first grade years, when focus either sticks or does not.

Little Dragons is where most Sterling Heights families start. Your child is in school all day now and being asked to sit, wait, and follow directions. This class trains the same muscles, just louder and with more kicking.

  • Focus that carries into the classroom
  • Confidence built from small wins, not trophies
  • Real coordination and body control
  • Learning to lose at something and try it again

Learn About Little Dragons

Kids karate class for ages 7 to 9 training at Mastery Martial Arts in Troy MI

Ages 7 to 9

MASTERY LEADERS JUNIOR

Old enough to understand why the rules exist.

Seven to nine is when children start comparing themselves to everyone around them. This is the age where a kid decides whether they are the type of person who is good at things or the type who is not.

  • Speaking up instead of going quiet
  • Taking on something hard without melting down
  • Leading a drill in front of other kids
  • Respect that shows up at home, not just on the mat

Learn About Junior Leaders

Ages 10 to 12

MASTERY LEADERS SENIOR

The last stretch before middle school changes everything.

Pre teens are figuring out who they are and who they want to be seen with. We give them something to be good at and a room where working hard is normal, right at the age when that stops being cool everywhere else.

  • Confidence going into middle school
  • Handling pressure from other kids
  • Training that is genuinely hard, not babied
  • Being the older student younger kids look up to

Learn About Senior Leaders

Ages 13 to 17

MASTERY TEENS

Somewhere to belong that is not a screen.

Teens who train have a place to go, people who expect them, and something that gets measurably better with effort. For a lot of families that turns out to matter more than the self defense.

  • Standing up to peer pressure without making a scene
  • Mental toughness that transfers to school
  • Practical self defense and real fitness
  • A group of friends outside of school

The Personal Power Plan

We ask you what you want to change first

Most schools teach the same curriculum to every child and hope it lands. We start by asking you what is actually going on at home.

Maybe it is homework. Maybe it is a kid who will not order their own food at a restaurant. Maybe it is a younger sibling getting steamrolled. We write that down, build your child’s goals around it, and check back with you on whether it is moving.

That is the reason we are sitting at 4.9 stars across 277 Google reviews, and it is the part parents mention most.

Questions From Sterling Heights Parents

How far is Mastery Martial Arts from Sterling Heights?

We are at 3656 Rochester Road in Troy, right across the Dequindre Road line from Sterling Heights. From Dodge Park it is about 15 minutes without traffic. From the south end of the city, near Ryan and 15 Mile, it is closer to 10 minutes. The route is simple: take 18 Mile Road west, it becomes Long Lake Road as soon as you cross Dequindre into Troy, then head south on Rochester Road for about a mile and a half.

What ages do you teach?

Ages 3 through 17. We group children by age so a 4 year old is never in the same class as a 12 year old. Tiny Tigers is ages 3 to 4, Little Dragons is 5 to 6, Mastery Leaders Junior is 7 to 9, Mastery Leaders Senior is 10 to 12, and our teen program runs 13 to 17. We are a kids only school. We do not run adult classes.

How much do classes cost?

Tuition runs from $97 to $225 per month depending on the program your child is in. Every membership is month to month, so there is no long term contract and nothing to buy out if your schedule changes. Your first month is covered by a 30 day money back guarantee.

Do you offer a trial class?

Yes. Every new student starts with a free one on one introductory lesson, then gets a free two week trial in regular classes. That way your child can try it before you decide anything.

Is the drive from Sterling Heights actually worth it?

That is the honest question most Sterling Heights parents ask, and only you can answer it. What we would say is this: come use the free intro lesson and the two week trial first. Drive it a few times on a real weeknight, at the time you would actually be coming. Then decide.

How often do classes meet?

Most students come twice a week. We run classes six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with weekday afternoon, weekday evening, and Saturday morning options. Call us at (248) 247-7353 and we will find the times that fit around school and everything else you are driving to.

My child is shy. Will they be okay?

Shy kids are a large part of who we teach. We do not put a nervous child in front of the room on day one. The first lesson is one on one with an instructor, not a full class, so your child gets used to the room and the people before anything is asked of them.

My child has a lot of energy and does not listen. Can you help?

Yes, and that is a different job than working with a shy child. High energy kids get structure, clear expectations, and something physical to pour the energy into. The listening piece is trained on purpose, class by class, not treated as something they should already know.

What if we start and it is not a fit?

Then you stop. Memberships are month to month, and the first month carries a 30 day money back guarantee. We would rather you leave than stay in something that is not working for your child.

Do you teach anything besides karate?

No. We teach kids karate and the character work that goes with it. We are not a boxing gym, a jiu jitsu academy, or a summer camp. Karate for kids is the only thing we do, and it is what we have done for 34 years.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Plenty of schools will teach your child to kick. Fewer will tell you what changed at home this month.

  • Classes built for one age range, not a mixed room
  • Progress reports on behavior, not just belt rank
  • Life skills taught on purpose in every class, not mentioned once a year
  • The same instructor every week for 34 years running
  • Month to month membership with a 30 day money back guarantee

“Mr. Strecker has the gift of coaching children martial arts with incredible enthusiasm. My son is very soft-spoken and shy with confidence issues and he has grown so much in the past six months under Mr. Strecker’s instruction. I highly recommend this community to any family looking for an opportunity to add some physical activity to their children’s lives as well as learn to incorporate more discipline, focus, and intention into your parent/child relationship.”

Phil WhitmerMay 2025

“Our family started with Mastery in 2021 and we have seen growth each and every year since, not only in skill but in confidence and abilities to handle tough situations. Mastery’s format teaches life skills, self-confidence and how to be better people all through karate as the avenue to do so. We looked at plenty of different schools before we settled on Mastery, which was choosen based on their teaching style and class format. We are not disappointed with the results and you won’t be either.”

Cory HeckMarch 2025

“We’ve been part of Mastery for nearly a year, and the growth we’ve seen in both of my daughters has been incredible. Their confidence, discipline, and focus have all noticeably improved. Mastery is about so much more than just martial arts, it’s about shaping the kind of person you become and equipping you with skills that will serve you throughout life, with the added fun of kicks and punches. The entire Mastery community is warm, supportive, and welcoming.”

Todd HoaglinJune 2025

“My son has been attending Mastery martial arts class for a four months now, and the transformation has been incredible. Not only has he developed physical strength and discipline, but the class has really helped him come out of his shell. He used to be quite shy, but the supportive and positive environment have given him the confidence to express himself and try new things. It’s amazing to see how much he looks forward to each session.”
