The Culmination of Years of Intentional Development
When we first opened Mastery Martial Arts over 10 years ago, this was simply a Black Belt program — focused on physical skill, discipline, and progression. But over time, we saw the need for more. Not just stronger martial artists, but stronger, more self-aware young adults. That’s when Leadership was built: a program designed to help students find their voice, build confidence, and overcome one of the biggest fears in life — public speaking.
The students who enter the Mastery Legacy Program have already gone through that process. They’ve found their voice. They’ve faced fear. They’ve learned how to express themselves. They are no longer the child who holds back — they are the one willing to step forward.
In our teen leadership program Troy MI, Legacy is where young people stop simply learning martial arts and begin to truly understand who they are and who they are becoming. Research from the American Psychological Association consistently shows that structured mentorship and identity-based programs during the tween and teen years produce lasting improvements in self-regulation, resilience, and leadership capacity.

Navigating the Tween & Teen Years
Our teen leadership program Troy MI is built for the tween and teen years, when the deepest questions begin to show up — and the outside pressures get louder. Our teen leadership program Troy MI exists to guide students through this stage with intention and structure.
“Who am I?”
Identity is being formed right now — with or without guidance. Legacy gives students a framework to define themselves from the inside out, not based on outside pressure.
Social Pressure & Shifting Peer Groups
Who your child spends time with changes everything. Legacy helps them develop the self-awareness to choose relationships that reflect their values.
Emotional Highs & Lows
Tween and teen emotions can be overwhelming. Legacy teaches students to manage their inner world with awareness and maturity rather than just reacting.
Increased Responsibility
More freedom comes with more responsibility. Legacy students learn to take ownership of their actions and follow through on their commitments — every time.
What Legacy Students Learn
Students begin to understand exactly who they are — not based on who they’re around or outside pressure, but based on awareness, values, and personal standards.
Lead Themselves First
Before leading others, Legacy students learn to lead themselves — managing their mindset, habits, and choices with intention.
Stay Steady Under Pressure
When things get hard, Legacy students don’t fold. They’ve been trained to stay calm, focused, and grounded when it matters most.
Manage Emotions with Awareness
Emotional intelligence is a skill. Legacy students learn to recognize, process, and respond to their emotions rather than react — one of CASEL’s five core competencies of social-emotional learning.
Take Responsibility & Follow Through
Legacy students hold themselves accountable. They say what they mean, mean what they say, and follow through — every time.
Hold a Higher Standard
Legacy is about becoming someone who holds themselves to a standard that most people their age haven’t even considered yet.
Become Someone Others Trust
Respect and trust are earned. Legacy students step into leadership roles with younger students — guiding, supporting, and leading by example.
From Something They Say to Something They Live
Legacy students step into leadership roles with younger students. They guide. They support. They lead. They begin to feel what it’s like to be looked up to.
This is where identity stops being something they say — and becomes something they live. This is the kind of work that can shape how your child shows up in the real world for the rest of their life.
These are skills most people don’t develop until college or their first job. At Mastery, Legacy students are building them now.
