Most Royal Oak Parents Call Us About One of Four Things
Their child is shy and will not speak up in class. Their child cannot sit still long enough to finish homework. Their child is getting picked on at school. Or their child would spend the whole weekend on a screen if nobody stopped them.
We work on all four. Not with lectures about respect. With 30 minutes at a time where your child has to try something hard in front of other people and finds out they can do it.
Then they do it again next week. That is how confidence gets built.
The Mastery Moment™
It starts small. Your child stands a little taller walking out of class. They listen the first time you ask. They run into something hard and do not quit.
Then one day they walk off the mat, look straight at you, and say: “Look. I’m doing it.”
That is the moment parents remember. We have watched it happen for 33 years, and Royal Oak families have been making the drive to Troy for most of them.
Why Royal Oak Families Choose Mastery
Eight Minutes From Royal Oak
Our school is at 3656 Rochester Road in Troy. From downtown Royal Oak that is about eight minutes up I-75 or Woodward. Most Royal Oak families fold it into the after-school drive.
We Only Teach Kids
No adult classes. No family classes. Every class, every instructor, and every drill is built for kids and teens, so your child is never the youngest person in a room full of grown-ups.
Personal Power Plans™
Every child gets a written plan built around what they need. A shy child works on speaking up. A child who quits things works on finishing. We do not run one curriculum at everybody and hope it lands.
33 Years and 4.9 Stars
Denny Strecker has taught children martial arts for 33 years and written two best-selling books for parents. Families have left Mastery more than 270 five-star Google reviews, at a 4.9 average.
What Your Child’s First Class Looks Like
Parents ask what actually happens, so here it is.
- An instructor greets your child by name at the door. Shoes come off.
- Your child lines up with kids their own age and bows in.
- Warm-up, then one skill broken into small pieces they can win at.
- A partner drill, so they practice talking to another kid, not just kicking.
- Bow out. The instructor tells you one specific thing your child did well.
You stay and watch the whole thing. No uniform needed the first time. Comfortable clothes are fine.
Kids Karate Classes Royal Oak: Class Times
We run classes six days a week, Monday through Saturday. Between weekday afternoons, weekday evenings, and Saturday mornings, almost every Royal Oak family finds two slots that fit.
That matters more than it sounds. The drive from Royal Oak is eight minutes, but only if you are not sitting on Woodward at 5:15. Pick the times that work around your schedule and the drive stops being a factor.
Most families train twice a week. We will walk you through the current times at your free intro class and find the two that fit your week.
What It Costs
Most schools make you call to find this out. We would rather tell you.
Tuition runs from $97 to $225 a month. Where your family lands depends on the program your child is in. We go through the options with you at the free intro class, after you have both seen whether this is a fit.
Two things we do that most schools do not:
- Every membership is month to month. No two-year contract. No buyout to get out of one.
- Thirty-day money-back guarantee. If your child trains for a month and you do not see it working, tell us and we refund you.
We can afford to do that because we have been at this 33 years and we know what happens by week four.

The Stripe That Changed Everything: A Royal Oak Story
A dad from the Northwood neighborhood brought us his nine-year-old son. The boy was a starter. New video game, new art project, new sport, he was all in for about two weeks. Then it got hard and he was done. His dad had watched it happen a dozen times.
The first few months here were rough. We held the line and so did his parents. His Personal Power Plan™ had one goal on it: practice his form ten minutes a day, including the days he did not feel like it.
His first stripe was not a participation prize. He had to show up and show improvement to get it.
When he earned it, something clicked. He had proof that the boring part paid off. He did not quit. A few months later his dad told us the boy’s grades were up and he had stopped abandoning projects at home.
That is what kids karate in Royal Oak is really for. Not fighting. The discipline to win the arguments you have with yourself.
Real Google reviews from Mastery parents. Nothing here is written by us.
“Our son has always been very timid outside of home, and just four weeks ago he wouldn’t even leave my husband’s lap to participate in class. Mr. Strecker has been incredibly patient, kind, and encouraging with him every step of the way. In only a few short weeks, we’ve seen such amazing growth in his willingness to participate, communicate, and step outside of his comfort zone.”
Brittany, mom of two
“This has been a great find for my son. There have been some big life changes lately and he was having a hard time expressing some of these emotions. Watching him build his own confidence in every class and learn how to have a voice again has been an incredible gift.”
Kristin Runde
“I noticed a change in my child’s behavior the 1st week. I’m not saying the fight is not there however I do see him choosing to make better choices. He’s gaining confidence and try’s more things.”
Jennifer McLain

Your Child Is Building Their Identity Right Now
Who your child becomes at fifteen is being decided at eight, by what they hear and see and feel every day. If we do not help them build that, the internet will do it for us.
We build five things on purpose, class by class:
- I am strong
- I am disciplined
- I am respectful
- I am focused
- I am a leader
Your child says these out loud until the day they start believing them.

Royal Oak families have been driving to Mastery for decades. Kids come to us from neighborhoods all over the city, and most of them found us because another Royal Oak parent told them to.
That word of mouth is the whole reason this school still exists after 33 years. It is also why we would rather show you a class than sell you one.
