Karate Belt Order for Kids

All 18 Belts, What Each One Teaches, and How Long It Really Takes

Most karate belt order charts show you the colors and stop there. This one shows you what a child is actually working on at each belt, and roughly when they will get there. It is the system we use with kids ages 4 to 12 at Mastery Martial Arts in Troy, Michigan.

The Full Karate Belt Order

Belt colors vary between schools and styles. What matters more than the color is what the child has to prove to earn it. Here is our karate belt order, with the character skill attached to each rank and the typical timing when a student tests every two months.

Each color is worked twice, as a belt and a high belt. The character goal stays the same across the pair, which is what gives a child time to actually build it rather than just pass a test.

Respect Isn’t a Belt. It’s Every Belt.

You will not find respect on the chart above, and that is on purpose. It is not a stage a child passes through and leaves behind. It is the standard from the first day to the last.

Every class starts and ends with a bow. Every belt test includes it. A white belt bows at the door and so does a black belt, which is why parents usually notice this one at home before the first belt is ever earned.

What the Karate Belt Order Actually Builds

The eighteen belts group into four things a child becomes, in the order they become them. Each one makes the next one possible.

1. Focus

White → Yellow · first 4 months

Your child learns to pay attention on purpose. They stand still in line, keep their eyes on the instructor instead of the window, and finish a drill without being redirected three times. Nothing else can be taught until this is in place.

2. Confidence

Orange → Green · 8 to 12 months

Your child knows what they can do, because they have done it. They look adults in the eye, volunteer to demonstrate, and try things in front of people knowing they might not get it right. This is the one most parents come to us for.

3. Discipline

Purple → Blue · 16 to 20 months

Your child does the work when they do not feel like it. They practice without being nagged, come back the week after a bad class, and keep a promise about homework because keeping promises has become a thing they do.

4. Leadership

Brown → Black · 2 to 3 years

Your child helps someone else get better. They teach a six-year-old to tie a belt, speak in front of the class, and take responsibility for something without being assigned it. Four of our eighteen belts are about this.

How Long It Really Takes

Students test roughly every two months. That is a deliberate pace. Fast enough that a child sees progress before they lose interest, slow enough that a belt still means something when they earn it.

The number parents ask about most is the first one. A child who starts in September has a belt around Halloween. That matters, because the hardest stretch of any new activity is the six weeks before the first visible win.

The second number is the one they came for. The confidence belt lands around eight months in. Not someday, and not on a promise you cannot check. It is a specific belt with a specific name, and your child comes home wearing it.

Black belt takes about three years of steady attendance. Anyone advertising much faster than that is selling belts rather than teaching children. Regular physical activity also carries real developmental benefits at these ages, which the CDC’s guidelines for children lay out in detail.

Stronger From the Inside Out

“Mastery isn’t only what I do. Mastery is who I’m becoming.”

Our students sing this. It is the last line of the song they learn, and it is the shortest honest description of what the belt order above is really for. The color changes. The character grows.

Come watch a class and you will probably hear it.

Common Questions About Karate Belt Order

What is the karate belt order from beginner to black belt?

At our school the karate belt order runs white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red, red/black, then black, with a high belt inside each of the first eight colors. That makes eighteen ranks in total. Other schools and styles use different colors, so always ask to see the specific chart before you enroll.

How long does it take a child to earn a black belt?

About three years of consistent attendance, with testing every two months. A child who starts at age seven is usually testing for black belt around age ten.

Why are there two belts of each color?

Because eight weeks is roughly how long a child can work toward something before they need to see progress. Splitting each color in two keeps a goal always within reach without cheapening what the color means.

What age can my child start?

We are a kids-only school and our classes run from age 4 through 12, with a separate teen program for ages 13 to 17. You can read more about what happens at a first class before you decide.

Do kids ever fail a belt test?

Yes, and it is one of the more useful things that happens here. A belt that cannot be failed is not worth earning. Students who need another cycle get one, and they are far prouder of the belt when it comes.
