Most parents bring their child in a little unsure. Your child might hide behind your leg. You might wonder whether you are meant to stay, what your child should wear, or whether they will join in at all. This page walks you through the first visit, start to finish, so you both know what is coming.

How a class runs
Your child starts with a free one-on-one lesson before joining a group. An instructor takes them on the mat alone, learns their name, and teaches a few basic moves. No line of strangers watching. No pressure to keep up with kids who have been training for a year.
Group classes follow the same shape every time. Kids line up, bow in, and warm up. They drill one or two skills. They finish with a game that hides the skill inside it, then bow out. Children settle faster when they know what comes next, so we keep the order the same.
Every class is kids only. Your child will never share the mat with adults or get lost behind bigger teenagers.
Classes are 30 minutes, on purpose
Thirty minutes is the whole class. We built it that way after 34 years of watching what happens at minute thirty-five: a seven-year-old who was locked in stops taking anything new in. A longer class adds time on the mat. It does not add learning.
Short classes are easier on you too. Thirty minutes fits between homework and dinner without wrecking the evening.
What to bring on the first day
Comfortable clothes your child can move in, and bare feet. That is all. We train without shoes on the mat, so there are no cleats or sneakers to remember.
Your child does not need a uniform to start. Some of our programs include one, and in others families buy it. Either way, that comes after you have decided to join, not before your first class.
Come ten minutes early. It gives your child time to look around the room before anything starts, which takes most of the nerves out of it.
Class times: flexible, Monday through Saturday
We run classes six days a week, Monday through Saturday, including after-school times. Because each class is 30 minutes, most families fit training around homework, dinner, and a sibling’s practice without rearranging their week.
Tell us your child’s age and we will send you the current times that fit your schedule. Denny answers these himself.

You stay and watch. Parents see the class, so you know what your child is learning and can back it up at home when the instructor asks them to look adults in the eye or finish what they start.
You do not need to coach from the side. Your child will look over at you. A nod is enough.
If your child is shy
Plenty of kids stand at the edge of the mat on day one. We do not drag them in. The instructor gives them a job, something small they can finish, and lets them join at their own speed. Most children are in the line by the end of the first class. Some take a week. Both are fine.
How belts work
Belts are not a race here. Your child earns each one by showing up, working at a skill, and finishing what they started. We time it so the goal always feels reachable.
Every student also gets a Personal Power Plan, a short list of goals you, your child, and the instructor agree on together. It might be speaking up in class, doing chores without a reminder, or leading a warm-up. The plan is what we track, and it is why the belt means something when your child ties it on.
