Black Belt Story – Falak Kotadia

From Shy Beginner to
Confident Black Belt

Falak Kotadia – Age 13, 5½ Years of Martial Arts Training at Mastery

Meet Falak Kotadia, a 13-year-old from Troy, Michigan who has invested 5½ years in martial arts training at Mastery Martial Arts. Her journey from a shy kid with little self-esteem to a confident leader earning her Apprentice Black Belt on May 23, 2026, is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when you commit to growth. Falak’s story is about discovering that you don’t need anyone else to believe in you—you just need to believe in yourself.

Why Falak Fell in Love
with Martial Arts

Falak’s parents chose Mastery Martial Arts in Troy based on the outstanding reviews. But what kept Falak coming back wasn’t just the school’s reputation—it was the feeling she got after her first class.

She remembers her very first day, wearing a peacock shirt. Shihan’s first words to her: “How’s your day?” When she said “good,” he immediately challenged her: “Did you say good because that’s what everyone says? How do you actually feel?”

That one interaction made all the difference. “That moment made me feel drawn to this program,” Falak says. It’s what she remembers most from her first day—and what kept her coming back for 5½ years.

Falak’s Hardest
Challenge on the Journey

For most students, pre-tests are a normal part of preparation. For Falak, they were the most challenging moments of her entire black belt journey.

The pre-tests made her feel discouraged. But here’s what separated Falak from students who quit: she learned the most important lesson of all.

“The thing that got me back up was believing in myself,” Falak explains. “No one else has to believe in me, be confident for me, or understand me. Only I can push myself to keep going—and it’s my choice whether or not I give up.”

This realization has shaped everything about who Falak is becoming. It’s not just martial arts wisdom. It’s life wisdom.

The Life Skill That
Transformed Falak the Most

Before martial arts, Falak was a shy kid with little to no self-esteem. Five and a half years at Mastery changed that completely.

Her eye contact improved. Her communication skills grew. Her view of herself shifted dramatically. The soft, welcoming environment at Mastery gave her a safe place to practice being confident.

Today, Falak uses the communication skills she learned in the dojo in her everyday life at school. Whether it’s working on projects, complimenting teammates, helping friends, or just having conversations—she connects with others around her using what she learned at Mastery.

Most importantly: she made friends. “Because of the soft, welcoming environment, my friendship-making skills have improved and gotten better,” Falak says. The kid who was once shy now knows how to build meaningful connections.

Falak’s Favorite
Techniques and Moments

When Falak talks about her favorite technique, her eyes light up: Peri, lift, trap, punch. “I enjoy doing it, especially fast, and I love teaching others the move,” she says.

The most memorable moments? The pre-tests themselves. “They are the most recent and challenging events I’ve done,” Falak explains. And her biggest role model at Mastery? Shihan. “He has helped improve both my strengths and weaknesses all while providing a ton of support.”

Her preparation strategy shows her discipline: every day focuses on a different area to work on. Her advice to other students? “Have an end in mind.” She proved this works by improving her fitness dramatically in just 4 weeks before her last pre-test—by consistently practicing with a specific result in mind.

What Falak’s Parents
Have Noticed

“Falak has much more self-confidence, leadership qualities, and is more independent. At school she participates a lot more and overall focuses on what she does both at home and school.”

“The class is a growth-supporting environment where the kids and adults have great connections. The self-defense skills are important, and I like the idea of making mistakes in class in a safe place rather than out in the real world.”

What Black Belt
Really Means to Falak

For Falak, a black belt isn’t just a piece of colored fabric. “Black belt to me is the reflection of the sacrifices, devotion, and care I put into something I love.”

She chose to continue karate not because she wanted a black belt to wear around her waist. She continued because she loved it. “Earning something has a much different feeling than getting something,” she says, quoting Shihan.

After earning her Apprentice Black Belt on May 23, 2026, Falak plans to keep her journey going. This isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning of the next chapter.

A Funny Memory
from Class

Not every moment at Mastery is serious. Falak has one memory that makes her laugh: a class discussion about lemmings.

When asked what lemmings do, Falak’s response caught everyone off guard: “Suicide.” Her explanation? “Lemmings often follow each other around, meaning that if one were to fall off a cliff, the rest of them would fall too, knowing that they are going to die.”

It’s darkly funny, unexpectedly wise, and totally Falak—someone who thinks deeply about loyalty, following blindly, and making your own choices.

Falak’s Three-Word
Journey: Mistake,
Learn, Improve

When asked to sum up her entire black belt journey in three words, Falak’s answer says everything about who she’s become:

Mistake. Learn. Improve.

That’s the cycle she’s learned at Mastery. You make mistakes—that’s not failure, that’s growth. You learn from them. And then you improve. Repeat. That’s how transformation happens.

What Makes Mastery
Different

When asked why she stayed at Mastery for 5½ years, when students often move between programs, Falak’s answer is simple but powerful:

“I left my first program not feeling confident. At Mastery, I felt confident from day one.” She felt seen. She felt supported. She felt like she belonged.

That’s the environment Mastery Martial Arts creates—one where a shy kid can become a confident leader, where mistakes are learning opportunities, and where earning your black belt means something because you chose to do the hard work.
