Why Mastery’s Taekwondo Method is Different

Most kids taekwondo schools teach technique. Belt progressions. Competition prep. Those things have their place. But they are not what drives lasting change in a child’s life.

At Mastery, we built our entire program around a single idea: Taekwondo is the vehicle. Character is the destination. Every drill, every class, every belt test is designed to develop five core identity pillars that define who your child becomes.

1. Confidence

Your child learns to attempt hard things, fail, try again, and succeed. That cycle builds a deep, unshakeable belief in their own ability. It shows up at school, in friendships, and in how they carry themselves every day.

2. Discipline

Discipline is not about being strict. It is about developing the ability to do what needs to be done, even when it is hard. Our structured training builds this muscle over time, and Troy parents consistently tell us it changes their home.

3. Respect

Respect for instructors. Respect for peers. Respect for themselves. Children who learn genuine respect become more cooperative at home, more engaged at school, and better at navigating relationships throughout life.

4. Goal Setting

The belt system is not just about rank. It teaches your child that consistent effort over time leads to real, visible results. That lesson carries into grades, sports, and every challenge they face as they grow up.

5. Emotional Resilience

Life is full of pressure, frustration, and setbacks. We train Troy kids to handle those moments without shutting down or acting out. The mat is where they practice staying calm under pressure — skills that matter far beyond martial arts. Our parent resources hub has free guides on supporting this growth at home.

The Mastery Moment™: Your Child’s Breakthrough

Every Troy parent who enrolls their child eventually sees it. We call it The Mastery Moment™.

It starts small. Your child stands a little taller after class. They stop saying “I can’t” quite so fast. They listen better at home. They walk into a room instead of hanging back. They face something genuinely hard — and they push through it instead of giving up.

Then one day they walk off the mat with a spark in their eye and say: “Look — I’m doing it!”

That is not just a breakthrough in taekwondo. That is a breakthrough in who they are. And it is what 33 years of Troy families keep coming back for. Read how Violet went from meltdowns to earning her belt →

If you are wondering how to start building this kind of confidence at home before your child ever steps on the mat, our guide on how to build confidence in kids is a great place to start.

Why Kids Taekwondo Works for Troy Children

🥊 Builds Unshakeable Confidence

Every board broken, every belt earned, every challenge pushed through teaches your child one thing: “I can do hard things.” That confidence does not stay on the mat — it follows them into school, friendships, and life.

🏅 Develops Real Focus

Taekwondo demands total mental presence. You cannot be distracted and execute a technique well. Troy kids who train consistently show measurable improvement in school focus and ability to manage distractions at home.

💪 Teaches Practical Self-Defense

Your child will learn real taekwondo techniques — kicks, strikes, blocks, situational awareness — in a structured and safe environment under expert instruction. Knowing they can protect themselves changes how they carry themselves.

🎓 Instills Lasting Discipline

Martial arts is one of the few activities where discipline is built into every single class. Troy parents regularly tell us that their child’s behavior at home changes within the first few weeks of training.

🚀 Teaches Goal Achievement

The belt progression system gives children a clear, structured path. Each rank requires consistent effort over time. Troy kids internalize a simple but powerful truth: showing up and working hard leads to real results.

🛡️ Develops Anti-Bullying Skills

Confidence and self-assurance are the most effective bully deterrents that exist. Our bully prevention program gives Troy kids the tools to stand up for themselves and others — without aggression.

Meet Chief Instructor Denny Strecker

Denny Strecker has spent more than three decades teaching kids taekwondo — doing one thing: helping children in Troy and metro Detroit discover what they are capable of. He opened Mastery Martial Arts in the early 1990s with a conviction that is still at the heart of everything the school does today — that martial arts, taught correctly, can fundamentally change the trajectory of a child’s life.

Denny is not a generalist. He has never taught adult classes. He has never pursued MMA or competition-only training. His entire career has been focused on one age group: children. That singular focus shows in the depth and specificity of the Mastery curriculum, the culture of the school, and the results Troy families see.

His first book, “How to Double Your Child’s Confidence in Just 30 Days,” draws directly from his classroom experience and gives parents a practical, actionable framework for building confidence outside the dojo. His second book, “From Chaos to Calm,” addresses one of the most common struggles Troy parents bring to him: children who cannot regulate their emotions and create constant friction at home and at school.

His YouTube series, “How to Raise Black Belt Kids,” has helped families across the country apply the Mastery approach to everyday parenting challenges. The show covers everything from handling quitting and defiance to building the kind of resilient mindset that separates kids who thrive from kids who struggle.

In 2025, Insider Weekly recognized Mastery as the Best Children’s Martial Arts School, validating what Troy families have known for years. When you enroll your child at Mastery, you are not just signing up for taekwondo classes. You are putting them in the hands of someone who has dedicated his professional life to this work.

What Troy Families Are Saying

These are not cherry-picked testimonials. They are the kind of story we hear every week. Read all 255+ Google reviews →

Marcus came to us at age 7. He was bright but deeply anxious — he would shut down in any new situation and his parents described him as a child who assumed he would fail before he even tried.

“Within two months we saw a completely different kid. He started trying things he would have refused before. He earned his yellow belt and cried — but good tears. He was so proud of himself. I have never seen him like that.”
— Jennifer M., Troy, MI

Priya joined at age 9 after a rough year of being left out by classmates. Her mom described her as withdrawn, reluctant to participate in anything, and spending most of her time alone.

“She talks about her class friends all the time now. She goes in nervous and comes out beaming. The instructors noticed her right away and made sure she felt like she belonged. It changed everything for her socially.”
— Sunita K., Troy, MI

Noah was 10 when his parents enrolled him, frustrated because he started everything and quit everything. Sports, music lessons, art class — nothing stuck. They were genuinely worried about what that pattern was teaching him.

“He has been at Mastery for 14 months and has not once mentioned quitting. He talks about his next belt constantly. The Personal Power Plan made it feel personal to him — like it was built for him specifically. That was the difference.”
— Mike T., Troy, MI

Aisha started Tiny Tigers at age 4. She was sweet but struggled with listening and would regularly melt down when asked to transition between activities — a daily battle at home and at preschool.

“Her preschool teacher pulled me aside after the first month and asked what we had changed. The focus, the ability to follow directions, the way she handles not getting her way — it was night and day. We credit Mastery completely.”
— Dawn C., Troy, MI

Looking at Your Options for Kids Taekwondo in Troy

Troy has good options for kids taekwondo Troy MI families. Everest TaeKwonDo is one of them — they are located on East Wattles Road and run a well-organized program with a competitive focus. If competition training and sport taekwondo are your primary goals, they are worth considering.

Mastery is built around a different set of priorities. Three things set us apart in a meaningful way.

First, we are exclusively kids-focused. There are no adult classes, no MMA, no jiu-jitsu. Every single class, instructor, and curriculum element is designed specifically for children ages 3 to 17. That specialization matters in ways you feel the moment you walk in.

Second, every student at Mastery receives a Personal Power Plan — an individualized roadmap built around your child’s specific needs, challenges, and goals. Your shy 5-year-old and your unfocused 10-year-old are not following the same plan. This level of personalization is unusual, and the results reflect it.

Third, our program is explicitly character-first. Self-defense and belt progression are real and valued — but they are means to an end. The end is a child who has the confidence, discipline, and resilience to handle what life actually throws at them. That philosophy shapes every class we teach.

Troy Parents Ask Us

What makes Mastery different from other taekwondo schools in Troy?

Three things primarily. We are kids-only — no adults, no mixed martial arts. Every student gets a Personal Power Plan tailored to their specific needs, not a generic curriculum. And our entire program is built around character development first, with taekwondo as the vehicle. Chief Instructor Denny Strecker has 33+ years of kids-only experience and is a published author on child confidence. That combination is genuinely rare. See our parent resources hub for more on our philosophy.

Do you offer a free trial for Troy kids?

Yes. Every new student starts with a free 1-on-1 introductory lesson. It is private, not a group class. Your child gets to experience the program, meet the instructor, and get a feel for the environment with zero pressure and zero commitment. Schedule it through our Personal Power Plan page.

What ages do you teach?

We serve children ages 3 through 17 in age-specific programs: Tiny Tigers (3–4), Little Dragons (5–6), Junior Taekwondo (7–9), Senior Taekwondo (10–12), and Teen Leaders (13–17). Every class is kids-only. No adults share the mat.

My child is shy and anxious. Will taekwondo actually help?

Shy, anxious, and easily overwhelmed children are some of the kids who benefit most from our program. The structure gives them a clear framework for what is expected. The small wins — completing a technique, earning a stripe — build real evidence that they are capable. We have worked with thousands of children in Troy who came to us exactly this way and watched them transform in ways their parents did not think were possible. The key is that we notice each child individually and meet them where they are.

Is Mastery a karate school or a taekwondo school?

Mastery is a kids-focused martial arts program that incorporates taekwondo techniques as the foundation of our curriculum. We do not offer separate karate or taekwondo tracks — what we offer is a unified character development program that uses martial arts training as the tool. If your Troy child is searching for kids taekwondo Troy MI classes or “kids karate Troy MI,” they will find the same program here and the same outcomes.
