A Birthday Party That Changed Everything
Dwij Bergi’s martial arts journey began at just 5 years old — and it started with a birthday party. A friend’s celebration at the dojo was the serendipitous moment that would set the course of the next eight years of his life.
He walked into Mastery Martial Arts nervous and curious alongside his sister, both searching for something that would truly stick. From that very first class, it was clear they had found it.
Today, Dwij is 13 years old and standing on the threshold of earning his Black Belt — the culmination of eight years of dedication, growth, and transformation.
The Moment He Decided to Become a Black Belt
From his very first days on the mat, Dwij was watching. Not just learning techniques — but studying the Black Belts who moved with confidence and led with character. What he saw wasn’t just martial arts mastery. It was the person he wanted to become.
That early vision of leadership became the driving force behind eight years of training. Every class, every belt test, every challenge — all of it pointed back to that original spark: becoming the kind of confident, capable leader he had admired as a white belt.

The Life Skills Dwij Built Over 8 Years
Martial arts training at Mastery Martial Arts goes far beyond kicks and punches — it builds the whole child.
Confidence
Dwij started as a shy child with few friends and poor public speaking. Today he can communicate with groups, make and keep friends, and speak up even when he feels nervous.
Communication
Martial arts taught Dwij to speak when spoken to — even when upset or scared. He learned to stay present and keep talking instead of shutting down, a skill that serves him every day.
Focus & Precision
His favorite drill — the fitness ladder — taught him that focus and precision aren’t just physical skills. They’re mental habits that carry into school, relationships, and every challenge he faces.
Perseverance
Two years of COVID lockdowns tested Dwij’s commitment like nothing else. He felt like giving up — but he persisted. That experience proved to him that he could push through anything.
Leadership
Inspired by his sister Nishi and the Black Belts before him, Dwij is developing into a leader himself — someone others can look to for guidance, encouragement, and example.
Goal-Setting
Dwij’s philosophy: “If you look at just the next step, you can break any goal down into just putting one foot in front of the other.” Eight years of training has made this wisdom second nature.
The Challenge That Almost Made Him Quit
Every martial artist faces obstacles. For Dwij, the COVID-19 pandemic was the hardest test of his eight-year journey. Two years of lockdowns. No in-person classes. Training from home with no mat, no classmates, no instructor standing beside him.
What kept him going? The same vision that started it all — those Black Belts he had admired as a white belt. He focused not on the finish line, but on the very next step. And that made all the difference.
The Night He’ll Never Forget
Ask Dwij about his most memorable moment and he doesn’t hesitate: the Night of Champions event, where he performed with the demo team in front of hundreds of people.
That night also deepened his Black Belt motivation. Watching the new Black Belts step onto the stage to receive their belts gave him a vivid picture of what he was working toward — and made him want it even more.
His favorite training activity? The fitness ladder — jumping between the bars with precision and focus. “It taught me focus and precision, two things I struggled with for a while.” The physical drill became a metaphor for his entire journey.

Dwij’s Advice to Every New Student
“While the goal may seem huge, if you look at just the next step, you can break the goal down into just putting one foot in front of the other.”What does Black Belt mean to Dwij?
“Black belt, to me, means to be a living example of the mastery pillars. To give respect to everyone. To be able to communicate with large groups of people. To be disciplined and a hard worker. To have high self esteem. To be honest and fair. And to believe in yourself, no matter what others think.”
— Dwij Bergi
His biggest role model at Mastery?
“My biggest role model at Mastery is my sister, Nishi. She isn’t just an incredible martial artist, she is a true leader. From leading groups effortlessly through drills, to being a sister to anyone who needs it, she is one of the only reasons I have the motivation to get where I am now.”
